Religion of a freethinker

I understand that the title is a dangerous word. And, it either might make you really excited about the upcoming few paragraphs but/or might also cause you to get over it already, with a face of ‘NOT THIS’. Well, especially if you are a non believer.

But, in either ways, I would be really grateful if you to give it a little time. I begin with a small introduction to my life and my own idea of what I think Religion is and what I believe it does.

I have Kaur as my surname and fairly, predictably – I am Sikh. Who was born some 18-19 years ago in a family with every member following Sikhism. Nobody asked the baby if she wanted to go through the holy water sipping ceremony at the age of 1.25 MONTHS but she went through it. Wait, what ‘went’ am I saying, she was totally unconscious. Nobody is ASKED if the talk is on religion and its somewhat TOTH (transmitting-over-the-head) aspects.

I have my father who wanted me to and is helping me to study every religion to the knowledge I think exists. And I don’t think there is any possible way for me to thank him for that. He is very right! He terms nobody is a believer, non believer, agnostic, atheist or any term that gives you a label in conversations of religion. YOU JUST ARE. A person. Who should be given a chance at least to know, to study, to understand things before blindly doing them and imagining, ‘he is on the best journey’.

He got me translated copies of holy books, The illustrious Qur’an, Shree Granth Sahib ji, Bhagwad Geeta. He asked me to read beautiful verses of The Bible, The Dhammapada (Buddhism), teachings of HH The Dalai Lama, and the best excerpts from various other holy and worth preachings.

Religion does nothing but gives us a label and may be a SENSE OF SOCIAL SECURITY that okay, yes, I have MY PEOPLE and that is where we start disobeying beautiful concepts like ‘vasudev-kutumbakam’ (Sanskrit: the whole world is but one family). Say, you want your mother always to have a seat in a crowded metro rail only because she is aged, then why to sit yourself when some other aged woman is standing, isn’t she somebody’s mother? You are not everyday tired and have feet paining on all days, come on!

CONCLUDING, I have learned and would love to share that NEVER find your soul stuck in between four walls of do’s and don’t’s unless your heart connects to that and that is the most important thing. Always keep the process of learning new things going and helping selflessly, feeling the heat that a rickshaw-puller feels when you pass by in an air conditioned car (Empathy) and then may be offering him some cold beverage you got. I know you might be thinking ‘Aise Sabko dene lag gaye toh toh ho gaya kaam aur yeh practical bhi nahin hai’, but, my friend, doing the most you yourself can is all that matters.

Rest, morals are vague, just be a simply respectable person with good ideologies and those ideologies turned into actions. Having a good heart should be a habit and shouldn’t be made out of some deal with GOD. GOD can not be always fair.
